Sophie-Size Calendar

Check it out!

I made something!

Unlike ALL of my friends, my ability to make anything crafty is about zilch. So, I was pretty proud of myself for thinking this up and actually following through.

Sophie has so much trouble understanding time, for obvious reasons. She would often talk about how she wanted to go to church, or dance class, or wherever, and couldn’t even come close to grasping the idea of “in two more days, honey, then we go to church.”

Introducing…. the visual schedule.

I actually got the basic idea from my special education background. At one point during college, I was working with kiddos with autism. Almost all of them used some type of visual schedule to help them predict their daily routine.

Hello! Perfect idea for Sophie to predict her weekly activities!!

She and I pick her basic activities on Sundays, and each morning during the week she moves her star over to the correct day. Then, we talk about what we’ll be doing. This is definitely a work in progress. I sometimes catch her moving the star to different days because she wants to do that activity now, thinking her star represents what we are doing next and not what day it is. Sheesh.

It has been a great tool, nonetheless!

I noticed that last time I was over and I love it! It’s a great idea to start giving some visual representation to time since they are always asking when do we…?
